Mess uses its hosted AI when available. A personal Gemini key is optional for local or private use; if added, it stays in this browser and calls Google directly. Get one at aistudio.google.com/apikey.

Boards + files sync to a free private GitHub repo — every sync is a commit, so you get full version history. Setup: create a token here (classic, "repo" scope is pre-checked, set expiration to "No expiration"), paste it below, hit Connect. The repo is created automatically if it doesn't exist. Token stays in this browser only.
